In this season when the Lord is doing a work in my life of changing perspectives and dismantling old mindsets, i'd just like to share lessons i've learned yesterday and over the course of a few weeks which i believe is relevant not just for my life but also for the ministry... God is changing my perspective and in this season, He wants me to think about people, to focus on people.. not to see ministry as a chain of events, activities or tasks that need to be implemented but to see ministry as a living breathing entity composed of people.. we are one body and a body moves, a body moves as one, with one heart, one mind, one purpose... its a shift from thinking and praying for activities to thinking and praying for people... cos we're building lives and lives are the ones that are important.. Jesus gave His life for people, not for events or activities, and in this hour, i believe the Lord is calling us to a paradigm shift to see ministry in terms of lives and not events.. He will open up our eyes to the value of every life that He entrusts to our care and when He finds us faithful with them, He'll give us more... :)
I've talked about how the Lord has been dealing with me in my previous post on the whirlwind.. how He has been crushing and breaking away my perfectionism and so on.. yesterday, as i was talking to Him, He was just showing me why He was doing it and it just somehow clicked in my mind yet again as i knew what He was trying to do.. during this time, somehow, the Lord has been causing my spiritual disciplines to fail... like when i would resolve to do a fast but would compromise here and there... not only was he dealing with perfectionism, pride and self-reliance.. He was getting to my heart.. and He was telling me how
my spiritual disciplines would fail if i don't have the heart behind them... More important than the disciplines themselves is the heart behind them.. Why do i wanna do what i do? Why do i go through so much? Is it to prove something to myself, to God, to others? Is it to show that i have "made it"? That i have "arrived" somewhat?? Cos He looks at the heart and not the external going through the motion of spiritual disciplines in themselves.. Spirtual disciplines are not an end in themselves- they're a means by which we seek God but the end of it, the goal should be God Himself, not to have that strong sense of satisfaction, pride and relief, sighing "aaahhhhhh" as if i'm so proud of myself having completed some rigorous exercise routine... Cos to Him, the pursuit is important and it's more important to have a seeking heart than a striving body.. He wants me to have the heart of David, a heart that is seeking after Him.. and when i get the heart right, then the spiritual disciplines will fall in place.. Even as i learn to depend on Him and cry out to Him to make my heart right in the first place.. "Give me the heart to pursue You, Lord!"
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." 2 Corinthians 4:7 First things first...
Yesterday, i've asked God why issit that my walk with Him and my desire for Him is so inconsistent.. like i can be desiring Him one moment and yet feeling so bo chap another and i felt that He was telling me that its cos i take me eyes off Him.. for my spiritual walk to be consistent, i must be consistently beholding Him.. and as i seek Him, evrything will fall into place, the rest of my life will fall into place and He will make my paths straight... :)
The other lesson God has been teaching me is on intercession.. how it's time we don't pray for events but we pray for people... i wanna confess something to you.. you may think that i really like to pray and yeah sometimes i do but many times i'm lazy and really, i haven been praying enough, especially for my LG and for the ministry.. i really feel inside me that my prayer life is far short from what God expects of me.. And God knows how i
don't like to pray, especially having to go through names of people one by one and spending time almost repetitively praying the same thing each one of them every day.. it's about the heart, remember, not going through the motion...
but God showed me a different way of praying.. It was as if He would ask me "who's in your heart?" And i ask myself that question.. "who's in my heart" and i'd pray for those names that the Lord has carved into the intercessory walls of my heart... it doesn't just work for people... it also works for God.. what i mean is, if God is on my heart and there are just so many things to thank Him for and i just wanna spend some time talking to Him about how great He is, i'll do that.. when praying for people, the Holy Spirit would cause some names to pop up and i'd just take a short time praying for them and remembering them before the Lord whenever i can... It's not about carrying some logistics list of who's involved in what in the ministry but it's God who adds names into our hearts and the Holy Spirit brings them to our remembrance at the appropriate time! :) That way, i learn not just to pray but also to love.. to love those people i'm praying for...
then the Lord allows my intercessory position to be tested... friction happens between me and some people.. and i have a choice whether to become bitter or better about it.. if i become bitter, would they still be in the intercessory walls of my heart? Would i still love them enough to pray for them? Like how Jesus, who is now interceding at the right hand of the Father went on the cross before that and interceded for His enemies, the very people who crucified Him.
"Father forgive them for they know not what they do..." When my position is tested, will i still pray for those who i don't really feel like praying for? I remember a few years back when a few friends of mine made it to the top of my prayer list only for me to have some kind of friction against them... and then i wasn't mature enough to learn my lesson so, hurt from the experience, i stopped praying for them.. not that i started cursing (though i was
seriously contemplating it... that's how bad it went...) but i didn't really
feel like praying for them anymore... when their lives kinda went on a downward spiral, inside, my wicked heart kinda gloated over it almost as if "haha.. serves them right!" and i was blinded to the puposes of God almost as if saying "haha.. that's their reward for what they've sown.. and
God made sure they got it!" I was blinded to the purposes of God in me interceding for the ones who hurt me... took me some time to get over that... Now the question arises..
if i had continued to pray and interceded for them, would their lives have entered that unnecessary peiod of a downward spiral in the first place? yeah i was young and immature but there's no excuse.. only now have i realised the full extent of how i failed that assignment... but its time we break some walls in our intercession and how can we break walls if certain walls and barriers to love are not broken in our own lives and minds??
That's why i cry out "enlarge my heart, Lord!!!" the larger your heart, the more you'll be able to pray for people and love them.. it's not my business whether they hurt me or not.. it's my business how i react to it.. or respond.. Christ must be formed in our hearts and God does that by giving us opportunities to choose whether to become bitter or better, whether to bless or to gloat, whether to love those who hurt us or simply not care... when we choose to bless, God blesses us.. not just externally but also internally by enlarging our hearts and giving us a greater capacity to love.. Even when people have hurt you, it also becomes a struggle to keep your heart soft before God and choosing to remain vulnerable even if it becomes really painful... The softer our hearts, the more God can use us in intercession.. are we bitter against someone? are we willing to allow God to deal with those areas of our lives and cry out to Him for the grace and let go of our bitterness? Prayer is just as about changing us (the way we move, live, see things, the way we operate) as it is about changing the situations and people around us... As i am faithful in loving and praying for the people God has put in my heart, He's gonna increase and put more people in.. i want the walls of my heart to contain the names of nations and people i've never even met before.. how willing are you for God to take you in the hights, depths and trials of intercession? :) There's so much more i haven't touched!
So... who's in
your heart today? ... ;)
