School

School just started yesterday... The first day was quite fun lah... we had this module where we get to watch film and TV shows..haha... on the days where we don't, we're actually supposed to go home and watch TV ourselves!!! This is one module where watching TV is supposed to be a good thing...haha... the lecture slot is 4 hours lah cos the last 2 hours is reserved for screening..haha but it was fun.. watched Batman Begins yesterday and there was this line that caught my attention "Why do we fall? So that we can learn how to pick ourselves up."

Anyway, went for Sociology lecture before that and there were 3 things things that the lecturer said that impressed me.. cos i think they're also true in the spiritual sense.

1. According to someone's theory, the less socially integrated (the less ppl interact in society) are likelier to commit suicide. This is so true lah even in the church setting cos some ppl may ask what is the value of coming to church since they can just meet God at home. The reason is because of fellowship. Fellowship ensures that you dun go and stray away as well as providing support whenever you feel down and discouraged so that you dun lose your faith in God. If there's just one piece of firewood burning alone, the likelier it is to get put out and the shorter the fire will burn. If you put it together with one big burning pile, the brighter the fire and the harder it is to put out! :)

2. The lecturer was giving an example saying something like "you can take Ah Kow out of the heartland but you can't take the heartland out of him" His point was that even if Ah Kow gets rich and somehow earns a lot of money, the way he carries himself will still be the same... he may still be unpolished in his mannerisms and his speech. This is also true with regards to the children of Israel (and some Christians at that). God brought them out of Egypt but Egypt was still within them. In fact, they even suggested to Moses a number of times to go back to Egypt when met with some difficulty in the wilderness. Some Christians also live their lives similarly, lacking transformation. People then wonder where's the power of God in our lives. Thank God for the Holy Spirit that as we submit ourselves to Him, it's His job to take the Egypt out of us, to transform us and make us more like Jesus. :)

3. One of the other things that the lecturer said was something like "The value of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" This statement is also true with regard to the church. Cos God values unity and we can experience much more of His power when we are united than when we just go about doing our own things separately and individually. Cos when there's unity, Jesus is glorified. Just as in 1. above when the fire is greater when the pieces of wood are together. Remember the 3 Hebrew children in Nebuchadnezzar's furnace?? There was one more in their midst. If 2 or 3 come together in His Name, Jesus is amongst us. So indeed the value of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts! :)
